Residency Requirements and Citizenship

Many people immigrating to the United States want to gain citizenship as quickly as possible. While permanent residency permits an individual to live inside the United States and enjoy many of the freedoms offered by the Constitution, only citizenship can allow participation in the political system and the full benefits of being an American. After gaining your residency, the path to citizenship is relatively straightforward.

EB-5 visas can make the citizenship process significantly faster. To learn more about EB-5 visas and how to file for this immigration program, contact the experienced EB-5 visa lawyers of White & Associates today at 818-730-3540.

Naturalization after an EB-5 Visa

An EB-5 visa can grant an immigrant permanent residency through business in the United States, which then puts the visa holder firmly on the road to citizenship. However, the EB-5 visa holder must then undergo the naturalization process in order to reach full citizenship, which allows the resident to get all of the benefits of being an American citizen.

Still, there are some important requirements a permanent resident must first meet before they can apply to become a full citizen, including:

  • Maintain permanent residency for at least 5 years
  • Have permanent resident status for at least 3 years if spouse is already an American citizen
  • Pass the federal naturalization test

Citizenship comes with a wide range of benefits and responsibilities, eventually allowing children of an immigrant to become citizens themselves.
